Chapter Nine
~ Lexie ~
The sun was bright through my bedroom window when I opened my eyes. Tristen and I had cuddled all evening, and Iâd been tempted to invite him to my bed for the night. Not for sex, but to hold me. It had been on the tip of my tongue when the power had surged on, loud and bright as all the appliances and some of the lights came to life.
Then heâd kissed me with all the passion of the night before when weâd been on the beach. His hands holding my face, his mouth devouring mine as if I were his favorite thing in the world. Who knew? Maybe, I was. He was certainly mine.
Unconsciously, my tongue skimmed over my bottom lip as if I might taste him still. Groaning, I rolled over, hugging myself. What was I going to do? I wanted Tristen. I wasnât sure I could have himâmore like I was pretty sure I couldnât. And this was so new. What if I took the chance, jumped and he got bored a few months from now? Sure heâd wanted me since the fall when weâd worked together, but I was like the new shiny toy to covet. Once you had itâ¦didnât some of the luster wear off?
Damn it, I was overthinking this. Typical. I was an overthinker.
And I had that online interview today. Iâd explained that I was on vacation and would have to do it on my tablet, but theyâd been fine with that. But Tristen⦠I knew he was not fine with it. Not even close. He wanted me to stay in Sweetville. Darn it, I wanted that, too, but I had to finish what Iâd started. Besides, I still had too many reservations about us.
Could I picture long term with him? Definitely. We just meshed together. Now and before. That had been part of the reason it had been so hard for me on his final day last fall. The thought of me leaving him this time left a hollowness inside me. So did the possibility of leaving Sweetville and my friends. I swear Kenna and Gracie would hunt me down, if I tried. But over everything else was Tris.
I had to figure this out.
I need a sign, I told the universe.
A really big, kick-me-in-the-butt sign.
With a huff, I dragged myself out of bed. I had to make myself presentable. That interview was this morning before I even had a chance to go downstairs and get coffee.
Twenty minutes later, I was ready to go. I wore shorts and a nice shirt since theyâd only see my upper half. Iâd tamed my hair into a braid and thrown on some gloss and mascara. I was interviewing to be a grade school teacher. Nice but low maintenance. There was no point in looking too glam. In fact, I was convinced it would be detrimental.
I propped my tablet on the dresser and pulled up a chair, making sure neither the messy bed nor the bathroom were in the frame.
